Meet a past winner: Joe Andon
At 28, Joe Andon, CEO of Vuly Play (formerly Vuly Trampolines), became the youngest person to win the Business Person of the Year Award.
Born in Bethlehem, Palestine, Joe came to Australia with his parents as a young child and grew up in Brisbane. Vuly began as Trampolines Australia, which he started at just 19. Joe developed an online business, building a website and selling trampolines from his bedroom at his parents' house until he had enough money to open a warehouse.
He has since turned Vuly Play into one of Australia’s largest outdoor play companies selling products worldwide. In 2013, Vuly invented the trampoline Leaf Spring system, solving the coil and frame collision problems that plagued generations of trampolines and has revolutionised the industry.
Two years later Joe redeveloped the Leaf Springs for Vuly Fusion, the world’s first seamless trampoline park. After installing Fusion into exclusively SkyZone, the world's biggest Park company, injury rates reduced by approximately 90-99% and up to 1,000 parks are now planned for around the world over the next 10 years.
Joe and Vuly are now recognised as global leaders in trampoline safety and aesthetic progress. Winning the 2016 Lord Mayor’s Business Person of the Year Award was even further endorsement of his success.
“I was very honoured and it has definitely helped with my reputation doing business internationally because the Lord Mayor’s stamp of approval gives it that extra special touch over other awards,” said Joe.
“It has also helped to spread the word on the amazing technologies being developed in Australia. In the past Australian companies bought products from the United States and elsewhere. Now it is the opposite and it’s really important people are aware that we can create and export a whole range of innovative goods and services.”
