Update: New high for trampoline entrepreneur named Business Person of the Year

Brisbane's best in business have been honoured at the 11th Lord Mayor's Business Awards. The 10 winners ranged from small to medium businesses to some of Brisbane's largest companies. They highlight the amazing depth and entrepreneurial spirit of Brisbane's business community. Winners included FivePointFour Holdings, RedEye, EM Solutions, Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, Tritium, Stephen Dibb Jewellery, Australian Country Choice, Tow.com.au, young entrepreneur Jock Fairweather (Little Tokyo Two) and Joe Andon, founder of Vuly Trampolines. The 2016 Optus Business Platinum Award went to Australian Country Choice, the world largest vertically integrated beef supply chain.

BRISBANE TIMES AWARD FOR BUSINESS INNOVATION

EM Solutions
EM Solutions designs and manufactures very high speed communications terminals used by both defence forces and corporations around the world.

Its new Cobra on-the-move satellite communications terminal provides the world's most robust stabilised platform capable of accurately pointing the antenna to a geostationary satellite while the terminal itself is moving on either sea or land. It provides assured communications by automatically transmitting on different frequency bands and satellites to overcome congestion or weather impacts.

Its Exomux radio transmits and receives data at fibre-like rates but with 20% faster end-end propagation time than fibre. Connecting the New York Stock Exchange, these radios support data throughputs three times faster than the closest competitor, over link distances twice the length, at a fraction of the latency.

Stephen Dibb Jewellery is Queensland's most awarded jeweller with awards for design, workmanship, customer service, training and community work. Their team of 10 make world-class jewellery in Brisbane for the people of Brisbane.

Stephen & Lisa Dibb are as passionate about their jewellery as they are about people. Their charity work is in both Queensland & Ethiopia, the birth place of their four adopted children.

Their work in child and adoption advocacy is extensive and includes providing cultural identity training for Ethiopian adoptees as well as being founding members of QAK, the Queensland Alliance for Kids, which is dedicated to providing permanent homes for the more than 9,100 foster children in Queensland through system change.

Australian Country Choice (ACC) is part of the Lee Group Pty Ltd a private family owned Company which commenced in Queensland as H.J. Lee and Sons in 1958 and is now headquartered in Brisbane's Australia Trade Coast precinct under the stewardship of Trevor Lee and fourth generation family members.

Employing over 1400 staff, ACC operates the world's largest vertically integrated beef supply chain with around 270,000 beef cattle grazing on 2.5 million hectares of land across 15 Queensland locations, prior to market finishing in one of the Company's three feedlots and processing at their world class Cannon Hill beef facility. These finished beef products can be found in most Coles supermarkets across the eastern sea board as well as the retail and food service sectors across the major cities of north Asia.

ISPT AWARD FOR DIGITAL STRATEGY

Tow.com.au is a high tech towing company. Despite being only 2.5 years old, it is Australia's first and only national towing company.

Tow.com.au has developed the only automated towing dispatch platform in Australia, TIMS (Tow and Impound Management System). TIMS was built and is continually developed in-house from Tow.com.au's Eagle Farm HQ. TIMS directly facilitates tens of thousands of tows across every state/territory of Australia each year.

TIMS is used by Queensland Police Service, with which, each of their 1,000+ comms operators log in and book tows/impounds as needed by police crews across Queensland. TIMS results in an extremely efficient towing service to support the mission critical nature of policing, by eliminating the need for manual dispatchers in place at every other towing operator.

SINGAPORE AIRLINES AWARD FOR YOUNG BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR

Jock Fairweather
At just 26 years of age, Jock's life goal is to reinvigorate the entrepreneurial spirit of Brisbane.

Commencing his career as a luxury women's shoe designer in Europe, Jock sold his business to a Swiss Equity Conglomerate at the age of 21. After returning to Brisbane Jock founded Little Tokyo Two, Australia's most diverse and supportive entrepreneurial community.

To date, Little Tokyo Two has housed over 500 businesses across all industries.

Through mentors, high-level connections, space, events, talent introductions and unlimited beer, Little Tokyo Two has impressive statistics including

  • 0 per cent fail rate
  • 34 businesses outgrown the community
  • Facilitation of 15 capital raises

Little Tokyo Two aims to become the support system of SEQ by continuing to open spaces and building communities in Brisbane and regional Queensland.

Joe Andon
Joe Andon founded Vuly at age 19. He began selling trampolines from his childhood bedroom, before earning enough to open a warehouse in Wakerley.

In 2013, Vuly invented the trampoline Leaf Spring system, which solves the coil and frame collision problems that plagued generations of trampolines.

In 2015, Vuly redeveloped its Leaf Springs for Vuly Fusion, the world's first seamless trampoline park. After installing Fusion into SkyZone, injury rates reduced by 99%. With 1,000 parks planned globally, this will lead to an injury reduction of 1,000 users per day.

Vuly's grown into one of Australia's largest play companies, selling in dozens of countries and securing contracts with Spin Master, Toys ‘R' Us, Harvey Norman, Canadian Tire and Bunnings Warehouse.
