Awards and Achievements

Congratulations to the founding CEO of Brisbane’s Translational Research Institute (TRI), Professor Ian Frazer, co-creator of the cervical cancer vaccine and recently awarded a 2015 European Inventor Award. He took out the Popular Prize section, which was decided by public vote and announced at a ceremony in Paris on 11 June.

The awards acknowledge inventions that have made major contributions towards social, technological and economic progress.

Professor Frazer co-created Gardasil with Dr Jian Zhou, the widow of whom, Xiao Yi Sun, was also on hand to accept the prestigious award.

Full steam ahead

Well done to Ergon Energy, which recently took out the prestigious International Edison Award for 2015 in New Orleans. The award recognises distinguished leadership, innovation, and contributions to the advancement of the electric industry for the benefit of all.

Ergon Energy earned the award for developing and implementing the innovative ROAMES Virtual World Asset Management System.

Brisbane based Ergon CEO Ian McLeod recently spoke to Brisbane Marketing about the award and how ROAMES works, the challenges and opportunities facing the energy sector and how important innovation is to staying ahead of the curve. Read the article here.

Half Brick Studio

Congratulations to Halfbrick Studios, landing a deal with YouTube to create an original series for its US YouTube Kids app.

The Brisbane based game developers behind huge hits Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride have been named as the first Australian partner to receive funding from YouTube to provide content for the internet giant's children's app.

Welcome

A warm welcome to the new Port of Brisbane CEO Roy Cummins, who has been in the role a month, after replacing outgoing CEO Russell Smith at the start of June.

Based internationally for the past nine years, he has more than 25 years’ experience in the ports industry.

For the last six years he was based in Russia, working for Global Investment Ports Ltd – the largest stevedoring group in Russia and Eastern Europe.


Foodie bites

There’s been a changing of the guard in King George Square, with Mantle Group acquiring Groove Train.

You’ll already notice the subtle rebranding as the ‘Train’ became Pig’N’Whistle King George Square last week.

It’s understood a full revamp has been scheduled progressively over the last quarter of the year.

Mantle Group is of course the dynamic team behind Jimmy’s on the Mall Brisbane, Pig’N’Whistle Brunswick St, Riverside, Queen St and Indooroopilly, where it also recently launched two new venues called Fish Feathers and Pigs Ear & Grill.

Feast on the very best that Queensland has to offer when Brisbane's signature food and lifestyle festival, Regional Flavours Presented by The Courier-Mail, returns to South Bank in July.

Now in its seventh year, the event promises an impressive line-up of celebrity chefs, industry experts and more than 80 of Queensland's top food and wine producers on the weekend of 18-19 July.

The partnership with The Courier-Mail will see a new and exciting event introduced to the festival this year. Queensland Taste Presented by The Courier-Mail is set to indulge wine-lovers while providing an immersive, quintessential tasting experience, showcasing the best of our state’s food, wine and live music scene.

Mouth-watering produce from 13 farming regions in Queensland will be on show in the Producer Showcase. Held on Little Stanley Street and its adjacent lawns, head along to sample decadent chocolates, creamy cheeses and other fresh produce, while meeting some of Queensland’s best providores.

Regional Flavours attracts more than 75,000 visitors to South Bank Parklands every year. For a weekend full of food, wine, lifestyle and leisure, head along to Regional Flavours in the South Bank Parklands on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July from 10am to 5pm. Entry is free.

Brisbane Marketing Members

Congratulations to Brisbane Marketing members Aria, Il Centro and QAGOMA for their efforts at the The Brisbane Times Good Food Guide 2016 awards, held this week.

Aria Brisbane was awarded Wine List of the Year, a category it also won in 2013. Il Centro’s Shawn Gomes was recognised as Champagne Pol Roger Sommelier of the Year, his second award in this category and QAGOMA Executive Chef Josue Lopez was awarded Citi Chef of the Year.

Olympic Champion Sebastian Coe will address hundreds of civic and business leaders in Brisbane for the region’s largest gathering of city leaders, the Asia Pacific Cities Summit, which starts on Sunday 6 July.

Delegates from more than 100 world cities are attending the 2015 APCS Brisbane Summit including leaders of government and business from across The Americas, Australasia, East Asia, Middle East, North-East Asia South-East Asia and South Asia.

Joining Sebastian Coe as keynote speakers are Randi Zuckerberg, the founder of Zuckerberg Media and former Marketing Director of Facebook, along with SY Lau – founder of Tencent media, a Chinese online behemoth and the world’s fourth largest internet company.

A warmer winter in Brisbane

Shivering Sydney and Melbourne residents were exposed to warm winter images of Brisbane’s visitor experiences through the lens of ‘Google Cardboard’ as part of an innovative new virtual reality activity last Saturday.

Brisbane Marketing joined Tourism and Events Queensland in using the new virtual reality technology to showcase interactive images of the city’s sub-tropical winter lifestyle and events to passers-by and residents inside specially-themed Brisbane ‘bubbles’ in the southern capitals.

The virtual reality activity forms part of a major marketing campaign highlighting Brisbane’s blockbuster winter events calendar which includes the upcoming Liverpool FC vs Brisbane Roar match and the Australia vs South Africa Rugby Championship Test.

The campaign is being rolled out via print, digital, mobile, outdoor, public relations and social media channels.

Submissions open for 2nd Asia Pacific Screen Lab (APSL) program

Submissions are open for APSL, a year-long development program for screenwriters, directors and producers, focusing on stories of Asia Pacific identity which could be made into feature length fiction, documentary or animation films.

Up to four projects will be selected and successful participants will be announced during the Beijing Film Academy 65th Anniversary in October 2015.

Participants will receive year-long consultation with a mentor, a member of the Asia Pacific Screen Academy, and can meet their mentors at the 9th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) ceremony in Brisbane on 26 November 2015.

The program is a joint initiative of Griffith Film School, the Asia Pacific Screen Academy and NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema), in collaboration with ASEF’s Cultural Networks, the SUN FOUNDATION and TEMENGGONG Artists in Residence.
