Christmas Tree sparkles in the heart of the city

Lighting of the Brisbane City Christmas Tree

Christmas in Brisbane celebrations will kick off this Friday evening with the annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree presented by St.George Bank in King George Square.

"The Christmas Tree in King George Square is a much-loved Brisbane tradition that attracts thousands of visitors every year," Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said.

The 22m tree takes a seven-person crew approximately five days to construct and weighs six tonnes.

“I am looking forward to welcoming thousands of families to King George Square on Friday evening for the official lighting of the tree," Cr Quirk said.

Ross Gillam, Head of Queensland & WA, St.George Bank, said St.George was delighted to partner with the City of Brisbane as Presenting Partner of the Lighting of the Christmas Tree.

The Lord Mayor will be joined by nine-year-old Asher Wright, who was nominated by the Starlight Children’s Foundation for the special honour of flicking the switch to officially light the tree.

Starlight will also be selling Starlight Wands and raising funds at the official celebrations in King George Square to help brighten the lives of seriously ill children and their families this Christmas.

“This year’s extensive program includes more than 150 free events to fill the city with festive cheer,” Cr Quirk said. "The Lord Mayor's Christmas Carols on Saturday 10 December at Riverstage is a wonderful night of singing and entertainment.

“Roma Street Parkland will host a week of Christmas Movies in the Park, as well as a brand new lighting installation that promises to be magical for children and adults alike.

“The Christmas Parade presented by David Jones features brand new floats, characters and costumes, and the Gold Lotto City Hall Light Spectacular will light up City Hall with a brand new story of an Australian Day Before Christmas.”
