MOU signed with Shenzhen
28 July 2015
This month’s Asia Pacific Cities Summit provided Brisbane Marketing Chairman Ian Klug with the perfect opportunity to strengthen Brisbane’s already strong ties with the Chinese city of Shenzhen.
During the summit, Mr Klug signed a significant Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the Shenzhen Foundation for International Exchange and Cooperation (SFIEC) - Shenzhen already has an existing sister city relationship with Brisbane.
A business delegation from SFIEC visited Brisbane led by Wang Shi, the founder and Chairman of China’s largest residential real estate developer Vanke Group, and also Chairman of the Shenzhen Foundation for International Exchange and Cooperation. Accompanying the delegation to mark the occasion was Shenzhen’s Vice Mayor Ai Xuefeng.
Shenzhen is a major city in southern China, located immediately north of Hong Kong, and is China's first and one of the most successful Special Economic Zones.
The Asia Pacific Cities Summit was the region’s largest gathering of city leaders, with delegates from more than 100 cities from across the world attending.
These included leaders of government and business from Shenzhen as well as others from across The Americas, Australasia, East Asia, Middle East, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia.
One of China's gateways to the world, Shenzhen is among the country's most developed cities and one of the fastest-growing cities in the world. It is the high-tech and manufacturing hub of southern China, home to the world's third-busiest container port, and the fourth-busiest airport on the Chinese mainland.
A key area of cooperation in the agreement is the creation of a New World City Alliance – both Brisbane and Shenzhen will explore the concept of this alliance and work together on initiatives to increase their respective profiles in the Asia Pacific, which would include events such as the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
Other areas of cooperation include trade and investment attraction activities of mutual benefit and exploring opportunities for collaboration on innovation and technology.
