Kurilpa Riverfront Renewal
Kurilpa Riverfront Renewal project is one of Brisbane’s most highly-anticipated and largest urban renewal opportunities in decades. The project aims to unlock about 1km of prime riverfront industrial land in South Brisbane, involving more than 25ha in area, that will transform it from industry and factories to the city’s most vibrant and diverse inner-city riverside community.
The prime site is on the doorstep of the city centre, framed by the iconic Brisbane River and Queensland’s most popular cultural and lifestyle precincts, providing it with the enviable opportunity to support the richest mix of uses. The integrated master planning process being undertaken by Brisbane City Council and the Queensland Government is exploring the potential for high-quality commercial, residential, and retail set among world-class public spaces, cultural offerings, and river experiences that epitomise Kurilpa. Master planning will seek to optimise development opportunities, provide developer certainty, and coordinate private and public sector investment for the delivery of essential infrastructure and new and enhanced public spaces and streets. A fundamental element of the project is working with key landowners in the precinct to facilitate the staged relocation of existing industry to alternative sites.
The master planning of this precinct was identified as a key initiative in both the South Brisbane Riverside Neighbourhood Plan and the City Centre Master Plan 2014, which have undergone significant community and industry consultation. It also seeks to align with key aspects of the River’s Edge Strategy to improve recreational and commercial access to the riverfront. The evolving master plan is expected to be completed by late 2014 following draft master plan consultation.
