Student blog: 5 ways to experience Brisbane as a sports lover
Bibidh Subedi is an IT student at Queensford College. Originally from Kathmandu, Nepal, he has a profound interest in literature and football.
Are you an avid sports lover? Got a sporting hobby? Or are you just keen to watch a few matches with mates? If any of those are true for you, you’re in the right city for it. Brisbane has exciting resources and an incredible community to help you get involved in almost any sport.
Stick to your favorite sport
Most people love a certain sport because they enjoy playing it. There are plenty of recreational sports facilities in and around Brisbane for all kinds of indoor, outdoor and aquatic sports.
Playing your favorite sport is certainly one of the best ways to utilise your free time and is also beneficial for your physical and mental health. If you are new to the city, it is an excellent opportunity to bond with people who share a similar interest. I have only been in Brisbane for about a year, and I already made some great new friends through playing my favourite sports – cricket and football.
Join a sports club
Do you want to be a part of a community where people support the same football team as you? Or, do you want to play a competitive sport with your local team or university? The opportunities are just around the corner!
From Manchester United to Brisbane Lions – you can find a fan club for almost any team you are passionate about in Brisbane. The best way to join them is through Facebook groups or pages. There are many local teams playing in amateur or semi-professional leagues too. You can also check with your university if they have a team of your favourite sport that you can join.
I am an ardent Arsenal fan and a member of a community of Arsenal fans in Brisbane. I connected to the group through Facebook, where we have general discussions. We often gather at a pub during match days and watch games together. What I love most is celebrating together after our team’s victory. It makes me feel I belong to a community, even far from my home.
Catch a game at a stadium
Watching your sporting idol play in person is always an exciting moment for any sports lover. The Gabba and Suncorp Stadium are two of the largest sports venues where Cricket, Rugby, Football and Australian Rules Football games are played. Brisbane’s rich and vibrant sports culture was also a major attraction for me to come and study in this amazing city.
The events not to be missed are the Brisbane International tennis tournament and the National Rugby League games. Mark your calendar for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup matches that will be held at the Gabba next year!
Visit a sports bar with mates
Watching your favorite sport on the big screen, great food, beer, your best mates, and a buzzing atmosphere - how great does that sound?
You can enjoy the big games at almost every sports bar or pub in Brisbane. You can feel a breeze of tension, anger, satisfaction, and anticipation blowing around the place. Every now and then, you hear collective screams of happiness or disappointment. Soak up that atmosphere while surrounded by fellow passionate sporting fans and you won’t even regret if you missed out on the game ticket! You can find some of Brisbane’s best sports bars here.
Try something new
As Brisbane has so many remarkable things to offer, I recommend you try something completely different! From abseiling the Kangaroo Point cliffs to kayaking your way around Brisbane River – some activities are just unique to Brisbane.
I only started watching rugby after arriving in Brisbane, and it has become one of my absolute favourite pastimes. If you haven’t tried anything new yet, why not give some indoor sports, snorkeling, horse riding, mountain biking or golf a go? It could well be your new best thing to do in Brisbane.
