9 ways to make the most of your semester abroad in Brisbane

Studying abroad is about more than just the bragging rights (tbh, that’s a pretty big part of it).

Save the jokes about riding kangaroos to uni for when you get home, and focus on milking your limited time here for all it’s worth.

Here’s how you can make your semester in Brisbane a memorable experience that will pay off for years to come.

1. Make some Aussie mates

Lone Pine Koalas

It’s easy to end up in a group of international students made up mostly of friends from home (or at least the same country). By pushing your boundaries to meet and make friends with local students, you can create a network of friends and families to come back to when you visit Brisbane for work and holidays. Who knows, you may end up living back here.

2. Find an internship

Having real-world experience is the perfect match for your academic experience, so if you’ve got both you’ll come out in front when applying for jobs back home. Australia’s education system and workforce are both highly valued internationally, so take advantage of the work on offer here and volunteer your services in your industry. Talk to a careers counsellor at your institute to find out how to set this up.

3. Get out and enjoy the sunshine

Picnic Kangaroo Point

Ride the CityCycles, picnic in the park, study on the lawn – every chance you get, go outdoors. Because before you know it you’ll be cooped up at home, wishing you were back in bright and sunny Brisbane.

4. Network

Drill your teachers and lecturers for key contacts in your industry and ask for introductions. Go along to industry networking nights and keep a record of the people you meet. The industry relationships you make now could set up you up for a job in Brisbane when you finish your degree.

5. Immerse yourself in local culture

Lord Mayor's International Student Friendship Ceremony

Arm yourself with as much local knowledge about Aboriginal culture, Australian history and landmarks as you can. Come along to a Lord Mayor’s International Student Friendship Ceremony and meet the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, experience traditional indigenous dance and get your own friendship certificate. You should also take advantage of the free Brisbane Greeter tours and take in the city’s history.

6. Volunteer

Another way to gain invaluable work experience in Brisbane is by volunteering. This way you can learn work skills, meet people and get some work experience under your belt.  Check out Volunteering Queensland online or ask at your uni for opportunities.

7. Live like (or with) a local

Fortitude Valley Markets

Don’t spend your weekends going to the same old student bar on campus (even though they’re great) – go where the locals go. Find the cool bars in the suburbs, the cheap local restaurants, the local grocer at the market and the live music at the pub.

8. Get involved in extracurricular activities

Lord Mayor's International Student Friendship Ceremony

Go beyond the assigned student groups for assignments and join a sporting club or student association. This is a great way to meet people and extend your skills set.

9. Write a Brisbane bucket list

If mountains are your thing, climb ‘em all. If you love live music, write a gig list. Whatever it is you love to do or want to see, add it to your ultimate Brisbane bucket list. Start by selecting a few from these 22 Brisbane experiences and go for gold.
