Record numbers attend Brisbane Student Friendship Ceremony
A record number of international students have attended the most recent International Student Friendship Ceremony - a staple in the city’s efforts to welcome students from around the world who will call Brisbane home while furthering their education.
With the event themed around employability, over 1,000 visiting students registered to learn about the pathways they can take following their studies in Brisbane, and other opportunities that exist for them during their stay.
Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, who hosted the ceremony, said Brisbane is the perfect destination for international students, with world-class universities and research facilities, coupled with a close proximity to beautiful beaches and natural wonders.
“As Australia’s New World City, Brisbane is making sure the world knows of the opportunities which exist for international students to undertake work experience, internships and casual employment to supplement their academic skills,” Cr Quirk said.
“Brisbane is ranked 21st in the world for ‘best student cities,’ combining world-leading educational opportunities with an unmatched quality of life, and we are glad the international students who are here will experience that for themselves.
“International students looking for a unique experience while furthering their educational opportunities should look no further than Brisbane – a city where you can experience everything Australia has to offer in the one location.
“Students will also have support from Study Brisbane – a body who works collaboratively with local industries and education providers to attract international students to enhance their experiences while studying in the city.”
Cr Quirk said Study Brisbane’s newest tool to assist students, in collaboration with local student accommodation providers, is the development of a destination portal to help students search for somewhere to stay while they’re studying in Brisbane.
“The Brisbane Student Accommodation Portal is a destination portal which maps out popular student suburbs in Brisbane, showcasing accommodation options, their proximity to educational institutes and the facilities which are available,” Cr Quirk said.
“Brisbane offers students affordable accommodation and a multicultural environment, with Brisbane’s international student population coming from more than 160 countries.
“The portal is not only a resource for our international students, but will also help domestic students who have chosen to study in Brisbane find accommodation, which is an important step to welcome students and make them feel at home.
