Why Brisbane

Brisbane’s major events calendar is jam-packed, from sporting events that are watched the world over to exclusive art exhibitions and Australian premiere productions.

Brisbane’s status as a global events destination was cemented when the city was selected to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Eighteen of the thirty-two competition venues for the 2032 Games will be in Brisbane, with 26 Olympic and Paralympic sports to be held within 5km of the city centre.

Here are 10 reasons why Brisbane is the go-to destination for major gatherings and events across sport, culture, science, design and the arts.

01. World-class stadiums

Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium consistently ranks in the top five rugby stadiums globally, and the iconic Gabba stadium is widely regarded as having one of the best cricket pitches in the world, with a proposed upgrade set to increase capacity to 50,000 to host the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic games.

02. State-of-the-art cultural spaces

A new $175 million, 1,500-seat theatre in the city’s South Bank cultural precinct is set to open to audiences in 2024, making the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) the largest of its kind in Australia.

03. A proven track record

Brisbane has a hugely successful track record for hosting international events. From English Premier League matches and international rugby, tennis and cricket tournaments to the Bolshoi Ballet, Brisbane has the experience and the appetite for hosting world-class major events.

04. An event-friendly city

With a collaborative government at all levels , and Australia’s largest local council at the helm, Brisbane takes an integrated approach to major events. That means less red tape and better results for both event organisers and fans.

05. Ease of access

Brisbane is a globally connected city, with a 24/7 airport boasting direct connections to 53 domestic destinations as well as major international hubs. The airport has the highest aviation capacity in Australia, with more than 50 million passengers a year expected by 2040.

06. Cost effective

Brisbane is more affordable than other international destinations and ranks as one of Australia’s most cost-effective capitals, with convenient, quality and competitively priced hotels, transport and hospitality.

07. Safe, vibrant and green

Australia’s greenest city, Brisbane is connected by close to 6,000kms of paths, walkways and bikeways, with new Green Bridges and the transformational Brisbane Metro and Cross River Rail projects set to enhance the city’s connectivity from 2024.

08. An activated city

Brisbane is your canvas. We light up our iconic Story Bridge for major events, commission street art, and host inner-city activations. Brisbane is bursting with opportunities to create buzz, raise awareness and entertain fans.

09. The great outdoors

With 240 days of sunshine, a subtropical lifestyle and a river at its heart, Brisbane is Australia’s best city for hosting open-air events. It’s also surrounded by natural wonders, with World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests, two of the world’s largest sand islands and breathtaking scenery on the city’s doorstep.

10. Acclaimed accommodation

Brisbane offers an array of accommodation for visitors, including 26 five-star hotels from both leading international and boutique Australian brands. Another four new luxury hotels will come online by 2024 as part of the multi-billion-dollar Queen’s Wharf integrated resort development.
