Meet the team: Carmel Akhavari - Choose Brisbane

Meet the team: Carmel Akhavari

Meet Carmel Akhavari - Project Executive, Business Events. While Carmel is the newest member of the team, she is a familiar and friendly face, having previously worked in Brisbane Economic Development Agency’s tourism and major events team.

My role at Brisbane EDA involves:
Project managing the business events teams’ participation in trade activity for national tradeshows, events and attendance at conferences, along with coordinating business event client programs such as tailored site inspections and familiarisations. In addition, working with the membership team to coordinate the annual schedule of member industry and networking events and activity.

I’m excited about working in the business events industry because:
I enjoy working with passionate people and my business events colleagues are dedicated and motivated local ambassadors for Brisbane. It’s exciting to see all of the different business events coming to Brisbane, and since joining the team I’ve gained new insight into what goes into winning a business event bid, and how Brisbane competes on a global scale.

My favourite time of year in Brisbane is:
Autumn - the days are a still warm and sunny but we start to feel those crisp morning and cooler evenings.

My favourite place to take visitors to Brisbane is:
You can’t go past Howard Smith Wharves with its new restaurants, bars and entertainment. It’s buzzing right now. My favourite spot would definitely be sitting on the deck at Mr. Percival’s, overlooking the CBD.

One Brisbane restaurant I keep going back to is:
LONgTIME. It has a great vibe, welcoming staff, and the food is always fresh, delicious and full of flavour.

When I’m not at work you’ll find me:
Outdoors either at the beach, going for a hike, having a coffee or trying out a new café or restaurant.

Brisbane is an exciting place to be right now because:
All of the new hotels, restaurants and bars mean there’s always somewhere different to go such as The Calile, Emporium South Bank, Westin Brisbane, Novotel South Bank and the W Brisbane hotel. The South Bank and Howard Smith Wharves precincts are destinations in their own right, and in a few years’ time we’ll welcome another exciting addition with the opening of Queen’s Wharf.

I couldn’t live without:
The sunshine and blue skies!

The country I would like to travel to is:
I would love to travel to Brazil to experience the culture, people, food and drinks. It all seems so exciting and fun!
