Update: Footwear designer named Lord Mayor's Business Person of the Year

Winners of the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards were announced at a gala dinner at City Hall. Now in their 12th year, the 2017 awards attracted a record number of entries.

Dr Christopher Jeffery – RER Labs

Dr Chris Jeffery has a well-rounded background of technical and management experience with qualifications in Engineering, Medicine, Leadership and Business. Initially undertaking an undergraduate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chris graduated with honours and the J.H. Curtis Award for Engineering Australia’s thesis of the year. Chris graduated from medicine in 2014 and mid-way through 2016 had successfully translated aspects of his PhD into three different commercial entities.

Today Chris’s main focus is on his role as CEO of Field Orthopaedics, a medical device company valued at over $27 million. Chris’s work has led to the inception of numerous companies and novel innovations such as headphones that personally customise sound, 360-degree immersive cameras, medical devices treating wrist arthritis, preventing surgical-related infections and improving minimally invasive surgery.

Caroline McCulloch - FRANKiE4 footwear

Caroline McCulloch, a qualified podiatrist and physiotherapist turned footwear designer, applies her biomechanical knowledge and style to her true passion: designing footwear in which women feel comfortable and confident. With her husband, Caroline co-owns Brisbane Podiatry clinics All Podiatry & The Shoe Co.

Launched in 2011 with 200 pairs of shoes, FRANKiE4 now orders over 100,000 pairs from its supplier. With two concept stores and 90+ stockists across Australia and New Zealand, FRANKiE4 is furthering its global reach, showing the range in Europe.

Caroline credits her success to having amazing staff and a great product. FRANKiE4 is the proud winner of the 2017 Australian Brand Awards for Product of Excellence and recently developed a sockette range to raise funds for Brisbane charity BrainChild.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Wallace Bishop – Wallace Bishop Jewellers

Born in 1934, Wallace is the third generation of the Bishop family to be involved in the Wallace Bishop Group. He is the grandson of the original Wallace Bishop, who founded the jewellery company in 1917.

His position as Chairman of the Group followed a long career with Wallace Bishop, which began immediately after completing his junior exams at Brisbane Boys’ College in 1950. His father, Carl Wallace Bishop, organised Wallace to begin training in the workshop as a watchmaker, and he went on to hold many more positions within the company before he became the CEO after his father’s death in 1976.

During the establishment of the Queen Street Mall in the 1980s, Wallace was a key member of the Brisbane Mall Advisory Committee and had a strong influence on the development of the major retail precinct.

With his business acumen and jewellery expertise, Wallace’s leadership resulted in Wallace Bishop increasing from three Brisbane City-based stores to the current 56-store operation across Queensland and New South Wales.

While no longer on the workshop floor daily, Wallace continues to work closely with his son Stuart, who is the youngest of his four children and the current CEO of Wallace Bishop Group, in overseeing the businesses and operations.

The Bishop family is also heavily involved with numerous charities and non-profit organisations, such as schools, hospitals, clubs, and local projects, as a way of giving back to the community.
