Lord Mayor's Tourism Summit brings together over 170 key industry players
The third annual Lord Mayor’s Tourism Summit was held earlier this month and saw more than 170 key industry players come together to have their say on what Brisbane’s visitor economy should look like.
The Brisbane Region is experiencing a transformation of its visitor economy, with over $15 billion of new projects planned or underway. The Summit aims to capitalise on this growth to expand Brisbane’s tourism outlook by honing in on the city’s competitive advantages and addressing the short and long-term needs.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner launched the Summit which brought local industry together to help shape and develop the new shared strategy for the Greater Brisbane Region, the Visitor Economy 2031.
Driven by Brisbane Marketing on behalf of the City, the Visitor Economy 2031 vision is empowering the local industry to develop a shared strategy to increase our visitor numbers, the amount of money those visitors spend and their length of stay. Ultimately, the strategy will work to drive a sustainable visitor economy across all aspects of visitation.
It’s about working in consultation with our partners across South East Queensland to drive the region’s visitor economy towards 2031.
Cr Schrinner said the Visitor Economy 2031 Vision would provide opportunities to grow Brisbane’s tourism industry, which is worth $7.8 billion to the local economy and supports more than 65,000 jobs.
“We’re in the process of gathering the industry’s perspective about how we can become globally renowned for our warm welcome, natural assets, innovative approach and embracing our authentic stories through collaborative marketing efforts with all of our partners.
“When we talk about the visitor economy, we are talking about international students, business travellers, those visiting friends and relatives, leisure and major events, who stay in our hotels and spend money in our bars and restaurants.
“Our Council is committed to working with our partners across South East Queensland to drive the region’s visitor economy towards 2031, and ensure we are doing everything we can to encourage tourism organisations and investors to create new experiences in Brisbane.”
At the Summit, attendees had the opportunity to attend industry expert led sessions on; building a global brand, an accessible and connected region, a vibrant and creative region, unlocking the nature on our doorstep, a smart and prosperous region, and creating a welcoming culture for Business and Major Events visitors.
Following the Summit, The Courier Mail kicked off a Future Tourism campaign. It examines the challenges and opportunities ahead for the Queensland’s tourism industry over the next 15 years. This included a Future Tourism lunch with demographer Bernard Salt as the key speaker.
