Brisbane now plays host to a large number of luxury hotels, with more than 4,600 new hotel rooms opening in the last five years. That number will continue to rise, with more than 1000 new premium hotel rooms expected as part of the Queen’s Wharf development alone. 

With more direct flights to Brisbane from more cities, including Tokyo, San Francisco and Chicago, and Brisbane continuing to offer visitors more to see and do — including the popular new Howard Smith Wharves development — Brisbane is becoming a must-do tourist destination. 

“It’s the shift from us being a gateway to an actual hub,” says Dustin Welch, Head of Property & Tourism Investment at Brisbane Economic Development Agency. 

“We’ll see tourism visitors staying in the city for longer periods, instead of just coming here and shifting north or south to the tourism destinations. That’s going to happen because Brisbane is now offering its own attractions at a scale that we haven’t seen previously.

“Hotel-wise, I see further growth. The increase in new hotels that has occurred across Brisbane… the demand has kept up with that new supply. We expect that to continue, as the new hotels offer an experience that hasn’t been offered in Brisbane previously.” 

As well as international tourists coming to Brisbane to visit, the city is also an increasingly popular destination for interstate talent looking for a new place to call home. Queensland now leads the nation in net interstate migration, a trend Welch expects to continue in 2020. 

“The forces driving interstate migration [to Brisbane] are immense,” he says. “People are being squeezed out of Sydney and Melbourne – on both costs and liveability. They come to Brisbane and discover a fantastic lifestyle, which is also affordable.  Combined with the right job, as the number of businesses headquartered in Brisbane grows, it’s an incredibly attractive proposition. We’re seeing real talent flow to Brisbane, and [businesses] are starting to see that.”
