Howard Smith Wharves redevelopment

Howard Smith Warves

Brisbane City Council has undertaken a series of restoration works at the Howard Smith Wharves site in readiness for its future development which will reactivate and re-energise this culturally important precinct. Construction of the new 170m timber wharf has been completed. The restoration captures the site's history as a working wharf. The cliffs surrounding the site have undergone stabilisation to ensure public safety and protect five World War II air raid shelters. Situated at Petrie Bight below the Story Bridge, the 3.4ha site is a prime riverside location that will, once developed, provide Brisbane with yet another enticing tourist site characterised by international flavour and quality.

The council has painted a very clear picture of how it envisages the redevelopment when completed, “The Howard Smith Wharves will be vibrant, sustainable and iconic. It will reactivate and re-energise a culturally important precinct. At its heart, Howard Smith Wharves will provide a high-quality public realm that celebrates its history and prime waterfront location, delivering an inclusive space for residents, workers and visitors alike."

The site provides an opportunity to revitalise this riverside precinct through mixed-use commercial and community facilities. It will include a new parkland and commercial development, helping to shape Brisbane’s city centre while catering for its growing population and increased visitation. The council is reviewing developer proposals for the site, a process that is expected to be completed this year.
