Brisbane's best bars for students
Wednesday wines-day, thirsty Thursdays, TGIF parties and Sunday sessions – there’s a bar for them all in Brisbane. We’ve rounded up the best student hangs and parties that willll see you through the uni term.
If a midweek party is your thing, you’ll find it at the RE. Uni nights are Wednesday and Sunday where DJs lead the party to all hours of the morning – just don’t miss your early morning lecture.
Before you can even say TGIF, you’ve made it to the student bar at QUT’s Gardens Point campus. Botanic Bar fills with students and young professionals Monday to Saturday from 10.30am until late. It’s the perfect place to kick off the weekend and oh so convenient for QUT students.
Brisbane’s coolest bunker bar cosies up down the end of Little Burnett Lane off the Queen Street Mall. It’s the city’s best-kept secret, with generous drink discounts and a simple but killer food menu. Visit Tuesday to Saturday between 5 and 6pm to take advantage of happy hour.
Students can meet international travellers at the city’s favourite backpacker hostel bar, Down Under Bar and Grill. Directly across the road from Central Station, it’s a hive of (drinking) activity all week. Find a party during the week or drop in for a bite and a cold one – you’ll be sure to find some friendly faces.
Sing your heart out to English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Thai tunes, or challenge your mates to a game of pool at Fat Louie’s. It’s an all-in-one package of karaoke, pool, cheap eats and drinks, popular for its party atmosphere, cosy couches and friendly patrons.
A sunny afternoon calls for a stop in at the Stockie, on the corner of Edward and Charlotte streets. The rooftop terrace and bar hosts live music most nights and DJs on Sundays. Drop in on a Thursday night for its student night special on beers and fried chicken.
More shenanigans for the city’s students can be found just across the road at The Vic. Thirsty Thursday is the uni night where anything from well-known DJs to toga parties are on offer. The Sunday session also kicks on in the beer garden.
Any day is a good day to go to Rics Bar in the Valley mall. The bar comes alive on weekends with live music inside and a packed-out beer garden until the early hours of the morning. Visit during the week to take advantage of daily food specials and happy hour drink prices. It’s open seven days until late.
Smack bang in the heart of West End is the suburb’s biggest pub and central point for students as the weekend nears. The Boundary has live music from Wednesday-Sunday and themes (including comedy, trivia, two-for-one meals) most nights of the week.
Also in West End (but not as loud) is the local brewery and bar, Brisbane Brewing Co. It serves up epic meals all week and hosts a two very happy hours from 4-6pm every day. We rate it for a Sunday session.
The only place to be in Paddington is at Lefty’s. The old time music hall heats up with live music from Tuesday to Sunday and keeps you hydrated while you bust a move alongside some skilled dancers. Don’t pass up the freshly squeezed apple juice with rum and check out the upstairs bar to cool down after a dance.
