7 cheap ways to exercise in Brisbane

Feeling guilty about that extra doughnut (or two) consumed during exam prep? Uh huh, we feel ya.

With summer just around the corner and the warmer days approaching, there’s no better time to get your heart pumping and thighs burning, and that #beachbod Insta-ready.

Forget pricey gym fees, the only thing we’re burning is calories.

1. CityCycle

Brisbane Greeters City Cycle

Get some definition in those calves and a derriere to rival Beyoncé’s by hopping on a CityCycle. With 150 stations across Brisbane and bike hiring available 24/7, this CityCycle saves you the expense of buying a bike and allows you to rent one out cheap as chips. The first 30 minutes of any journey is free so it won’t break the bank – or your diet.

2. Get active with Riverlife

Mix up your usual exercise routine and relish the natural playground that’s right on your doorstep. Whether it’s kayaking on the Brisbane River, abseiling the Kangaroo Point Cliffs or tearing up the esplanade in some rollerblades, Riverlife has it all. Be sure to use its student discount offers.

3. Kangaroo Point stairs

If you enjoy a workout that will challenge you and thrive on that jelly-like feeling in your legs, then the Kangaroo Point stairs are just what the doctor ordered. Scaling the Kangaroo Point Cliffs, these stairs are a well-known exercise spot for Brisbane’s cardio-lovers and, come Saturday morning, a bustling hive of energy and lycra. Bring your friends along and exercise at your own pace alongside a breathtaking river view (pun intended).

4. Get your OM-nom-nom on

Kiss the Berry Acai Bowls

Head to the South Bank Parklands until 30 November 2019 for free fitness classes including yoga, pilates and Zumba as part of the Medibank Feel Good Program. If the sound of free exercise in a stunning location isn’t tempting enough, then perhaps the offer of a free acai bowl taster from Kiss the Berry will convince you. Better start practising your downward dog.

5. Explore Brisbane's walking trails

Find a friend with wheels and head somewhere scenic in or around Brisbane, as this city is gifted with wonderlands for avid hikers and wildlife spotters. You’ll be spoilt for choice with natural wonderlands like Mt Coot-tha, Mt Tamborine, D’Aguilar National Park and more right on your doorstep. You’ll feel revitalised and ready to take on the world. Check out our guide to the scenic walking trails around Brisbane here.

6. Morning Parkrun

For all you morning people out there, this one is for you. Every Saturday morning at 7am a group of energised individuals get together to participate in Parkrun, a 5km timed outdoor run. There are Parkruns at New Farm, South Bank, Chermside and many other locations in Brisbane, and they welcome any level of experience so you can go at your own pace. It’s free to attend each week – just register online, find your closest Parkrun and you’re ready to go.

7. BCC’s Active Park events

Brisbane City Council’s Active Parks program offers free or low-cost activities suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Bring out your inner Rocky with boxing classes, find your zen with a yoga class or whip out those Saturday night moves at Zumba. With activities in more than 50 parks, you have no excuse. So put that active-wear to use and get to a park near you.
