Brisbane international student numbers on the up


The number of new international students who commenced studying in Brisbane so far this year has climbed 12 per cent.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the Semester 1 rise in new international students studying in Brisbane followed a 10 per cent rise in commencement numbers for all of 2016.

“Brisbane’s international student enrolments have burgeoned to 78,000 annually, demonstrating the effectiveness of the city’s world-class educational institutions and the attraction of our enviable lifestyle,” Cr Quirk said.

“Brisbane provides a welcoming, supportive and stable environment that encourages students from more than 160 countries to exceed at their studies, helping them prepare for the careers of their choice.”

Cr Quirk officiated at the quarterly Lord Mayor’s International Student Friendship Ceremony, which re-affirmed the city’s support of the 600 students who attended.

“This ceremony celebrates Brisbane as a multi-cultural city that embraces diversity and places an emphasis on offering a warm welcome to our international students,” he said.

“We want to acknowledge that these students are here in Brisbane to realise their dreams and ambitions for the future, and we want to offer them our support and the hand of friendship.”  

The Study Brisbane program facilitated by Brisbane Marketing aims to enhance international students’ experiences in Brisbane.

Study Brisbane works with universities, state and private schools, vocational education and training providers, English language colleges and accommodation providers to promote the high standard of education in the city. 

Additionally, the Brisbane International Student Ambassador Program encourages student leaders to share their experiences of studying and living in Brisbane. They use social media to update peers, prospective students and families overseas.

The city has 44 international student ambassadors from 34 countries, making it one of the most diverse student ambassador programs in Australia.
